Museum Educator

POSITION SUMMARY

As the face of the museum to our visitors, Museum Educators provide excellent customer service, implement educational programs and support imaginative play and discovery.

ABOUT THE DULUTH CHILDREN’S MUSEUM

The Duluth Children’s Museum is a place where children begin their lifelong exploration of an ever-expanding world. The museum’s mission is to engage children in hands-on learning through creative play and interactive exhibits.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engage children in play through the use of exhibit components
  • Facilitate educational programming, following Museum program procedures and expectations
  • Support day camps, outreach events, and workshops
  • Greet and welcome adults and children, engage in conversation, and accurately answer guest questions regarding all aspects of the Museum.
  • Maintain clean, safe and inviting environments in all Museum spaces
  • Actively address guest feedback and work to improve overall guest experience
  • Maintain current knowledge of all membership, programming, special events and exhibits
  • Follow opening and closing procedures for effective and accurate Museum operations
  • Operate and maintain knowledge of Museum’s point-of-sale and crm database systems
  • Support membership sales, including active selling, taking payment and data entry
  • Support Gift Shop including cashiering, stocking, cleaning, and merchandising
  • Answer and direct incoming calls
  • Coordinate with and support volunteers throughout the Museum
  • Assist in training new employees, as assigned
  • Support floor operations and programming initiatives, as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Education and Experience

  • One year working with children in an educational setting
  • One year working directly with crm's and point of sale systems.
  • One year of customer service experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge and capacity to work effectively with people from diverse professional, cultural and personal backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of working directly with crms and pos systems
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to overcome objections and resolve issues.
  • Ability to work with a positive outlook in a changing environment and adjust priorities.
  • High degree of confidentiality, diplomacy, discretion and tact.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to achieve results both individually and working with others.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use computer and other technical resources to effectively accomplish work.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to exhibit a positive, friendly and helpful attitude with museum visitors and be sensitive to their needs while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Proven ability to ensure customer outreach satisfaction and consistent service.
  • Ability to work independently as well as on teams on specific tasks within organizational policies and procedures.
  • Strong relationship building and communication skills to represent the organization and interact with outside individuals from the community.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Physical Demands:
  • Ability to use a PC/laptop, requiring repetitive motion of fingers, hands and wrists.
  • Required to provide interactive hands-on programming to children for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift materials and equipment for educational activities (50lbs)
  • Ability to work flexible hours (outside of regular operating hours) to accommodate the needs of the museum.

WORK CONDITIONS
This position will be scheduled 12-20 hours/week. Our current operating hours are 9:00 am-4:00 pm (schedule will be between 8:30am-5:30pm) Tuesdays through Saturdays, with occasional evening events. Saturday availability is required. Sunday hours for birthday parties & facility rentals may also be available.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $15.00-$16.00 per hour, dependent on experience

Summer Camp Counselor

POSITION SUMMARY

Join our vibrant summer team as a Camp Counselor, where your enthusiasm and dedication will create a fun, safe, and enriching environment for children and youth. In this role, you will lead engaging activities, foster positive behavior, and support the overall development of campers. Your energy and leadership will inspire young minds while ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the summer season. This paid position offers a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting impact on children’s lives while developing valuable skills in childcare, education, and leadership.

DUTIES

  • Supervise and engage children in a variety of camp activities STEM, Art, and Gardening.
  • Maintain a safe environment by enforcing camp rules, practicing proper behavior management techniques, and responding promptly to any emergencies or incidents with first aid when necessary.
  • Foster inclusive participation by working with children of diverse backgrounds and abilities, including those requiring special education support or additional accommodations.
  • Support early childhood education principles through age-appropriate teaching methods, tutoring sessions, and developmental activities that encourage growth.
  • Manage classroom settings during scheduled activities, ensuring smooth transitions and adherence to schedules while encouraging teamwork and positive social interactions.
  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians about camper progress or concerns in a professional manner.
  • Collaborate with fellow counselors to plan daily schedules, organize performances or theater activities, and coordinate sports coaching sessions to keep campers active and engaged.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience working with children in settings such as daycare, babysitting, tutoring, or camp environments is highly desirable.
  • Strong classroom management skills combined with the ability to adapt teaching methods for children with special needs or those requiring additional support.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with children, parents, colleagues, and community partners.
  • Passion for working with kids and fostering a positive camp experience through energetic leadership and creative programming.

WORK CONDITIONS
This position will be scheduled 30 hours/week. Camps run Mondays-Thursdays 9am-3pm, June through August.

Pay: $16.00 per hour

True North AmeriCorps Member

POSITION SUMMARY

The Y’s True North AmeriCorps (TNAC) program is dedicated to enhancing long term education equity outcomes by increasing K-8th grade students’ interpersonal skills and social competencies. TNAC members facilitate weekly interventions including positive relationship building, academic enrichment, and interpersonal skill building. By engaging positive adults as mentors to provide interventions for youth, the program will improve participants' interpersonal skills, attitude towards learning, and resiliency; ultimately increasing their likelihood to graduate high school on time. This is an AmeriCorps member position.

The Duluth Children's Museum is fun, fast-paced, and the fifth oldest children's museum in the United States. We pride ourselves on offering a safe, engaging environment for children to grow and thrive and to explore their passions in life. Our summer camps are a highlight of the programs we offer at the museum each year. Through our camps, we are able to bring together students from all areas of Duluth and have them get to know each other in a fun environment. The True North AmeriCorps member will work alongside our Education team to plan and facilitate a variety of engaging and hands-on activities for children to participate in! We are looking for an outgoing individual that is excited to work alongside kids and create memorable experiences for our campers!
