Musical March at the Museum

What are some of your favorite musical memories as a child? Many of us have fond memories of singing with our families, playing instruments, or attending musical performances. Music connects the generations, is an engaging educational experience for the entire family, and provides a gateway to the arts. Music not only connects us, but is important for child development.

“Music speaks to children in the areas of the brain that process sound and emotion, which are both fully developed at birth.” —Joan Koenig, founder and director of the American Conservatory preschool and kindergarten in Paris and author of The Musical Child.

Music is an important tool that can help children grow and learn! Music supports:

1. Cognitive development: Music can help children develop important cognitive skills, such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. Learning to read music and play an instrument, for example, can stimulate the brain in ways that enhance overall cognitive function.

2. Emotional development: Music has the power to evoke strong emotions in people of all ages, and can be especially important for young children who are still developing their emotional awareness and regulation. Exposure to a variety of musical styles can help children learn to recognize and understand different emotions, and may also help them express their own emotions in a healthy way.

3. Social development: Making music with others can help children develop important social skills, such as cooperation, communication, and teamwork. Playing in a band or orchestra, for example, requires children to listen to each other, follow cues, and work together to create a cohesive performance.

4. Motor development: Learning to play an instrument or sing requires the use of fine and gross motor skills, which can support physical development and coordination.

5. Cultural awareness: Exposure to different types of music can help children develop an appreciation for different cultures and traditions. Learning about the music of other cultures can also help children broaden their understanding of the world around them.

We are celebrating music all month long at the museum this March with daily programs and special musical guests! Check our events and programs page and discover music this March with your family at the Duluth Children’s Museum!
